My oldest 2 both got email addresses when they turned 10. It was the biggest event of their lives.

For 2 weeks.

Now they both check it maybe once a week if they remember to. The way to go is to pay for one of the kids email places (there's a ton) or I went with gmail, as they have fairly good spam filters and I can connect their account with mine, and I can see their emails from my account.

Same rules, though, homework, chores, must be done first. And screen time is the first to go upon displays of pissy behavior. So far its working OK. My 12 year old is actually using her email for signing up for school activities, and can check it on her iPod touch (that she saved for herself as well!!!). So, I agree, as a father I'm terrified of the bad stuff that's out there in the interwebs, but they need to learn about it and how to deal with it sooner or later. And I know I'm probably the one sheltering them a bit too much already.

Been reading for a while, love the blog! Seems like some of these posts I could write about my own life!

Wilhelm! This is awesome - I don't have any doubt you'd be a superstar teacher. As far as giving up on journalism, life Just changes. Almost NOBODY is doing exactly what they envisioned 15 yrs ago. You probably never thought you'd be an at-home dad even 10 years ago (and I'd have bet the farm I'd never have 4 kids 10 yrs ago!!!)

One simple fact seals the deal in my humble opinion: print/digital news is an extremely saturated marketplace. In a 24-hour, Twitter-style, rapid fire news cycle, you can argue that there is TOO MUCH "journalism" going on already! I can say for sure that schools need teachers with hearts a LOT more than the news media needs more people reporting on stuff.

On a side note re: writing...ever think of writing a book? It would keep you involved in those processes whilst you win your "Newcomer Teacher of the Year" award ( for which you're clearly a shoe-in...) I've read that self-publishing is pretty easy these days - don't need Random House to get it going...

Looking forward to future installments - love to the gang!!

Good luck, Will. You clearly relate to children and seem to be able to discipline them and set limits as well as come up with creative and stimulating activities, for them. Plus you seem to enjoy it. Along with substituting, talk to to other teachers and see if their experiences match up with your expectations.

Having managed a bed and breakfast for three years, and used too many brands over the years, I can recommend without hesitation the miele. Yes, they are more expensive than your average kenmore or hoover, but...BUT they are a workhorse. Other vacuums tremble with fear when they see one coming - upright or rolling around on three wheels. I bought one before Amelia was born and seven years later I've never had to do anything other than change a filter and the bags, which I use the off brand that fits to save on the moolah.

First off, let me say that the vacuum industry probably hates me. Why? My hair breaks almost all vacuum cleaners. It's long, and will wrap around the brush to the point you need scissors and a knife to cut it off. Dyson, animal, was the first one to not break down on me after several years of use. Also, it was a floor model. We used it on both hardwood like floors and carpet.

With that said, we now have a Kirby, it's really expensive, but it works on both floors and it will do about anything you want. Supposedly it will clear drains and you can spray paint with (no joke, it's what the guy said). It's just really expensive. Good luck!

I have a Hoover that has a 5 year warranty, that I've taken to the shop twice. Don't be so excited about not having bags, that just means you have to dump all the stuff you normally don't see/touch because it's contained in the bag.

I endorse the Dyson. Totally gets dog hair off the rug and works on hardwood and carpet. If you have or know someone with a Costco membership buy it there. If you're not satisfied return it. Just my two cents.

I think one of the biggest challenges is how make your kids eat healthy food, especially when they love to eat the pizzas and the burgers and subway sandwiches! I faced a similar situation when both my adolescent kids wanted to go out and eat with their father. All healthy home cooked food was going for a waste most of the days of the week. So I started researching and sending my research work to my husband through emails, as I knew he always reads his emails at least 4-5 times a day. At first he wasn't too observant, but one day he came back home with a heavy expression and told me that he was shocked by the the fact that junk food contained so many toxins. Bingo!

He stopped taking kids to eat out so frequently:)

Next I had to convince kids. So everyday while eating together on the dining table, I kept explaining them the benefits of healthy food. I told them about all the anti-oxidants, about how each and every ingredient of their food affected their health and what beverages are good. I think after brain washing them constantly for so long, both of them have started understanding and crave less for junk food. But I haven't really kept them away from sinful food. I do take them out - maybe twice in a month and believe me they are happy with just that. I am a happy soul now:)

Oh I wouldn't go as far as saying anybody in my house likes asparagus. My 9-year-old eats it under extreme duress -- with threats of lost screen time and canceled playdates. Then he only eats about an inch of it, making a face like I'm making him eat pig brains soaked in rancid orange juice -- even though I cut it into pinky-nail sized pieces and mix it with whatever else is on the plate. He just doesn't get that the five minutes of protest and agony far outweighs the nine seconds of chewing and swallowing that would make it all go away...
